Sunrisers aim to shine against CSK

Seven games into its IPL campaign, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finds itself in an enviable position. Defying all pre-tournament predictions and clearly punching above its weight, the team is now in joint-second spot.

For SRH, success has largely been built on the collective effort of its bowling unit — Amit Mishra, Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma — as seen from the two sub-130 totals it has defended, and the individual brilliance of Thisara Perara as witnessed in the penultimate over heist against Kings XI Punjab. Not to forget Hanuma Vihari’s two Man-of the match efforts.

However, on Thursday when it takes on Chennai Super Kings (CSK), with which it shares the second spot, at Chepauk, the in-form Perera will have to sit out — Darren Sammy or Nathan McCullum is likely to replace him. With Kumar Sangakkara unavailable, Quinton de Kock’s not-so-encouraging displays (2 and 0) and Cameron White’s inconsistent shows, the brittle top-order clearly needs reinforcement.

And this has come in the form of Shikhar Dhawan’s return. The man who made a sensational 187 against Australia on Test debut is all set to play his first game of this edition.

VIJAY’S FORM A WORRY

As for M.S. Dhoni in the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR), some of his prayers were answered — runs for Suresh Raina and a brisk start at the top. But Murali Vijay’s wobbly form (104 runs at 17.33), so far masked by Michael Hussey’s class, will continue to worry him.

The problem of bowling at the ‘death’ still plagues CSK. It leaked more than 50 runs in the last five overs in each of the last two home games against Pune Warriors and RR.

Dhoni will need to plug this hole for his team to consolidate after three wins on the trot.

Saina,Sindhu enters round two of India open

As expected, top seed Saina Nehwal made a winning start to her campaign at the India Open badminton but it was end of the road for World No. 7 Parupalli Kashyap at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

Saina, the London Olympics bronze medallist, took just 33 minutes to breeze past Indonesian Belaetrix Manuputi 21-12, 21-15 in the women’s singles, while fifth seed Kashyap failed to overcome former World No. 1 Taufik Hidayat, bowing out 21-13, 21-23, 18-21 in a keenly-contested men’s singles first round clash.

Saina now faces Japan’s Yui Hashimoto in next round.

The Kashyap disappointment notwithstanding, there was good news in the Indian camp with P.V.

Sindhu, Ajay Jayaram, R.M.V. Guru Sai Dutt and K.Srikanth turning in gritty performances.

While Sindhu showed Chinese Xue Yao the door with a 17-21, 21-18, 21-14 victory, World No. 30 Jayaram saw off Vladimir Malkov 21-17, 21-17. Guru Sai Dutt won by a 21-16, 21-17 margin against Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto. Anand Pawar too advanced with a 11-21, 21-13, 21-19 win over Japan’s Takuma Ueda.

But the highlight of the day was promising youngster Srikanth’s upset win over fourth seeded Dane Jan O Jorgensen 21-7, 18-21, 21-12.

“It is one of the biggest wins of my career. I lost to him (Jorgensen) in the Swiss Open so it was a sweet victory for me,” said Srikanth.

Having made early exits in the previous editions of the event, Saina began on a strong note as she led throughout the first game.

Relying on smashes and cross court tosses, the World No. 2 opened up 4-1, before quickly moving to 143.

Though the Indonesian capitalised on a few unforced errors, the Indian took away the game with a winner.

In contrast, the second game was keenly contested as Balaetrix came up with a strong counter to Saina’s attacks and caught up with the Indian on several occasions. Trailing 2-5, the Indonesian made it 5-5 before making it 9-8. But Saina came back to level with the opponent at 10-10 before leading 17-14 and then went on to win from there.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar turns 40

Test and one-day cricket`s greatest run-scorer approaches the game with undiminished enthusiasm and insists he has much to offer despite slipping from the dizzying heights he reached earlier in his 24-year career.

"People have been talking about my retirement since 2005, but that does not worry me at all," Tendulkar chided reporters at a promotional event in New Delhi last week.

"Your job is to write, my job is to play. I will stick to my job and you stick to yours."

Tendulkar, afforded almost religious status in India, burst onto the world cricket scene as a 16-year-old in 1989 and has played a record 198 Tests and 463 one-dayers, scoring an unprecedented 100 international hundreds.

He was singled out by Don Bradman but the Australian legend`s Test average is one of the few marks that Tendulkar has not been able to threaten, with his 15,837 runs coming at 53.86. Bradman averaged 99.94.

However, questions over his future mounted when he struggled for a year to score the ton he needed to take him to 100 centuries. He finally achieved the landmark against Bangladesh in Dhaka in March 2012.

Tendulkar, who decided not to play Twenty20 internationals after just one match in 2006, announced his retirement from one-day cricket last December in a bid to prolong his glittering Test career.

But his form in the five-day format has also dipped by his own stellar standards. He has scored just 1,145 runs in 21 Tests at an average of 31.80 since being part of India`s World Cup-winning team two years ago.

And Tendulkar has not added to his tally of 51 Test centuries since making 146 against South Africa in Cape Town in January 2011.

But despite his struggles with the bat, the veteran is refusing to follow fellow modern greats such as compatriot Rahul Dravid and Australia`s Ricky Ponting into retirement.

Sunil Gavaskar, the first man to reach the 10,000-run milestone in Tests, suggested last year that Tendulkar`s reflexes were on the slide. Former Australian captain Steve Waugh also feels he is past his best.

"He is not playing up to his standards," Waugh said last week. "But he himself has to decide (on retirement)."

When India succumbed to a Test series defeat against England at home in December, former skipper Sourav Ganguly backed calls for Tendulkar to quit.

"He is getting a long rope because of what he has achieved," Ganguly was quoted as saying by London`s Daily Telegraph newspaper. "As somebody watching it from outside, Tendulkar is not performing.

"And I think if I were Tendulkar, I would go (retire)."

But Kapil Dev, another ex-India skipper, says Tendulkar is fit and hungry for success even after so many years of gruelling cricket. "Sachin passes on both counts. He could go on for years if he wanted to," he told AFP.

Six months ago, Tendulkar admitted in a television interview that retirement had crossed his mind, but said he would take it series by series before making a final call.

"I am 39-plus and it is not abnormal for me to think of retirement," he said. "I will go by what my heart says. At this moment, my heart says I am OK."

There has been speculation in the media over whether Tendulkar will play in India`s next Test outing - a three-match away series against world number one side South Africa starting late in the year.

There is even talk of organising two home Tests against an unknown opponent before the tour of South Africa to enable Tendulkar to bow out with 200 appearances in a farewell series.

But few would be surprised if the player, described by former India coach Gary Kirsten as cricket`s "greatest role model", bats on at the top level.

As many as 102 cricketers have played Test matches after hitting 40, the oldest being Englishman Wilfred Rhodes, who was 52 when he took on the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1930.

Tendulkar, who last year accepted a government offer to take up a nominated seat in India`s upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, has never revealed what he wants to post-retirement.

"It is going to be hard because I have not experienced anything close to what I might go through when I retire," Tendulkar said in a recent television interview.

"I cannot relate this moment with any other moment in my life."

Sachin born to Bat

New Delhi: Record-breaking batsman Sachin Tendulkar turns 40 on Wednesday with no plans to retire despite media speculation and recent form suggesting that age is finally catching up with the "Little Master".

Test and one-day cricket's greatest run-scorer approaches the game with undiminished enthusiasm and insists he has much to offer despite slipping from the dizzying heights he reached earlier in his 24-year career.

Li Na welcomes home interest

Stuttgart: Australian Open finalist Li Na said Monday she is pleased her on-court success has triggered a tennis boom in her native China as she prepares to launch her clay-court season at Stuttgart's WTA tournament.

"Now so many kids want to be professionals, they see the games broadcast on television. When I was little, it was quite different," admitted the 31-year-old, who is the second seed in Stuttgart behind Maria Sharapova.

Li is a megastar in China where her 2011 French Open triumph was watched by 125 million on television, while an estimated 400 million watched the news the morning after.

She has risen to fifth in the world having reached this year's Australian Open final, where she lost to Victoria Azarenka, having also reached the 2011 final.

It was her break through season as she went onto beat Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the French Open final to capture her only Grand Slam title to date.

Li even made the cover of Time magazine earlier this year, after being voted one of their 100 most influential people in the world, but does not allow that to go to her head.

"Whether everyone knows me in China? I can't really tell you that, because our country is very big," she told reporters with a wink at Monday's press conference.

“The hustle and bustle was a bit unpleasant at the time, but things have got back to normal now," said the right-hander.

Nevertheless her debut as a Time cover-girl clearly impressed the tennis star, even if it took a while for the penny to drop.

"When I saw the cover, I thought 'I know that person'," she beamed.

"That was very cool and exciting that they have chosen me.

"I hope it helps the sport of tennis in China."

Star shuttler Saina Nehwal says she's scared of walking alone in Delhi

Star Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal, who is scheduled to play the India Open Super Series in the national capital later this week, said on Monday that she was scared of walking alone in Delhi.

Ahead of her participation in the championship, the London Olympic bronze medallist issued a statement as Delhi hogged limelight once again over yet another rape in the city, this time that of a five-year-old.

"After what I have heard, it is really very scaring. I will think twice (about walking alone in Delhi). This can happen to me as well. It is very unfortunate. Delhi is a beautiful city but such incidents have truly tarnished its image,Ć¢€ the world No 2 shuttler said in her statement.

"Last time, I came to Delhi there was rape incidents and again there is rape. I am very sad and upset with what is happening in Delhi. Something must be done immediately to stop this,Ć¢€ she said.

The Olympian has been upbeat about her prospects in the India Open. As many as 220 players from 18 countries would be participating in the tier-two tournament, to be held at Siri Fort Complex from April 23 to 28.

Record of Sachin Tendulkar-Vinod Kambli's historic partnership destroyed

It was a record that brought India's greatest cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, into the limelight. The document that was witness to a historic partnership has been destroyed forever. Burnt by the Mumbai School Sports Association for, believe it or not, lack of storage space. Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli shared a record 664-run partnership, playing for Shardashram Vidya Mandir against St. Xavier's in Harris Shield on February 24, 1988. It was the highest partnership for any wicket in any class of cricket in a tournament organised by the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA). But the association has done away with the original score sheet. MSSA Cricket Secretary HS Bhor said, "It was like any other sheet from a normal game and few years back, white ants ate into those sheets". For many, this score sheet was a historic document. Not so for the Mumbai School Sports Association which destroyed it as if it was just a piece of paper. Cricket lovers are aghast at what the association has done. Sachin would perhaps be disappointed too. Shockingly, Mr Bhor defended this action saying, "The score sheet was kept along with all the other records of games and has since been incinerated as we could not store them all. You cannot expect us to store files that are 25 years old." For an association that conducts school sports, this lapse shows the bureaucratic manner in which it functions. The association could have framed the document, presented it to Sachin or even given it a place of prominence in its own office. Sadly, it chose to destroy it.

Churchill signs Chettri on loan from Lisbon I-League club

Churchill signs Chettri on loan from Lisbon I-League club Churchill Brothers signed India football captain and forward Sunil Chettri on loan from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon for four months. Churchill Brothers' president Churchill Alemao said from Goa that the forward has completed his signing Tuesday and will be playing the remaining of the matches in the I-league and the AFC Club Cup. "We have just completed the signing of Chettri. He will be available for four months," said Alemao, without disclosing the amount that was paid for his transfer on loan. The club president said they wanted to rope in Chettri last year only but the India captain had already committed himself to Sporting Lisbon's B team in the second division Portuguese league. "We wanted him last year only. But he had already committed himself to Sporting Lisbon. This time when we approached him, he readily agreed," said Alemao. Chettri signed a two-year contract in July last year that would keep him with the Lisbon club till June 2014. But Chettri, a former Kansas City strike, found it hard to break into the ranks and spent most of the time warming the bench in the Liga de Honra, which is the second division Portuguese league. Chhetri never got a start in any of the 15 matches this season so far. Chettri came on as a substitute thrice and stayed on the bench on 12 occasions. In all, he managed just 46 minutes in three matches. The 28-year-old made his debut in 2-0 win against Freamunde coming on as a substitute in the 87th minute. His next match was in Sporting B's 3-2 win over Braga B during which he played for just three minutes after he came on as a substitute in the 88th minute. Chettri spent 39 minutes, the most during his stay at Lisbon, in his team's 2-3 loss to União Madeira that was his last appearance in December. Chettri, who is the third Indian to ply trade in an overseas league, has been desperately trying to make his mark in overseas clubs without any success. He had an unfruitful stint with American Major League Soccer (MLS) club Kansas City Wizards in 2010. Chettri left after spending much of the time on the bench in Kansas. The next year, Chettri appeared for unsuccessful six-day trials at Glasgow Rangers and later rued the lack of "enough opportunities" and termed his short stay there as "disappointing". He had brief stint with I-League clubs Chirag United and Mohun Bagan before finally signing for Sporting Lisbon in July last year as a free agent.
